Sauna electrical requirements
This is the question that decides whether your sauna is a weekend delivery or a three-week project with a permit.
This guide is orientation, not code. Electrical requirements vary by model and by local jurisdiction. Always follow the manufacturer's manual and have hardwired work done by a licensed electrician. Improper wiring voids warranties and starts fires.
The three tiers

What “dedicated circuit” means
A dedicated circuit runs from its own breaker to one outlet and powers nothing else. It matters because a sauna draws near its maximum continuously for 30 minutes or more. Sharing a circuit with a freezer or a bathroom outlet is how you get nuisance trips mid-session, and in the worst case, an overheated conductor.
Manufacturers specify a dedicated circuit for a reason. Ignoring it voids the warranty.
Reading your panel
- Find the main breaker rating at the top — usually 100A, 150A, or 200A. That is your total service.
- Count free slots. A 120V circuit needs one slot; 240V needs two adjacent slots. Full panel? A sub-panel or a tandem-breaker rearrangement is usually possible, at cost.
- Estimate headroom. A 100A service already running central air, an electric range, and a dryer may not comfortably take a 40A sauna heater. An electrician can do a proper load calculation; guessing here is a bad idea.
- Measure the run from the panel to the sauna location. Distance drives wire gauge and therefore cost, especially on outdoor installs where the run may be trenched.
GFCI and outdoor installations
Most jurisdictions require GFCI protection for saunas, and effectively all of them do for outdoor units and anything in a damp location. Outdoor installations also typically need weatherproof conduit, an exterior-rated disconnect, and a permit with inspection. Budget for it.
What the electrical work costs
Rough US ranges, before permits:
- New 120V/20A circuit, short run: $250 to $600
- New 240V circuit, indoor, moderate run: $500 to $1,200
- 240V circuit, trenched to a backyard sauna: $1,200 to $3,500
- Panel upgrade to 200A: $2,000 to $4,500
Get this quoted before you order the sauna. On a backyard install, the electrical can be a third of the total project.
Before you buy, confirm
- the exact voltage, amperage, and wattage from the manufacturer's manual
- whether the unit ships with a plug or is hardwired
- which side of the cabin the electrical connection is on
- whether your local jurisdiction requires a permit
