Infrared vs traditional sauna

They share a name and almost nothing else. One warms the air around you; the other warms you and mostly leaves the air alone.

How each one actually works

An infrared sauna uses carbon or ceramic panels that emit infrared radiation. That energy passes through the air with little effect on it and is absorbed by your skin, so you sweat heavily at an air temperature that feels mild. This is why an infrared cabin can run at 130°F and still produce a serious sweat.

A traditional sauna heats a pile of rocks on an electric or wood-fired heater, and the rocks heat the air. You are being warmed by hot air convecting against your skin, which is why it has to be much hotter to work. Pouring water on the rocks briefly raises humidity, spikes the perceived heat, and is the whole point for a lot of people.

Which one should you buy?

Choose infrared if

  • you want to plug it into an existing outlet and not hire an electrician
  • you want to use it on a weeknight without a 45-minute warm-up
  • high heat is uncomfortable for you
  • you want to read or listen to something during a longer, gentler session
  • your space is small — infrared cabins are generally more compact

Choose traditional if

  • you want real Finnish heat and steam, and know the difference
  • you want to pour water on rocks
  • you already have or can add a 240V circuit
  • you want a sauna that comfortably seats three or more
  • you are building outdoors and want the classic barrel or cabin experience

A hybrid is a third option. Some cabins combine infrared panels with a traditional rock heater so you can run either mode. You pay for both systems and the cabin has to be built for the higher temperature, so hybrids sit at the top of the price range — but if you cannot decide, they are a legitimate answer rather than a marketing gimmick.

Cost of ownership

Purchase prices overlap heavily; the differences show up around the sauna. Traditional units more often require an electrician, which is commonly $400 to $1,500 depending on the run from your panel. Running cost favours infrared for short sessions because it reaches temperature quickly and draws less power, but a traditional sauna used for a 15-minute session after a 40-minute warm-up is not dramatically worse.

What about health claims?

Both are pleasant, both make you sweat, and both have some research behind cardiovascular and recovery benefits — mostly on traditional Finnish sauna, which is where the long-running population studies come from. Marketing claims that a specific wavelength produces a specific medical outcome run well ahead of the evidence. Buy the one you will actually use.
